'Those concluding hours tested every limit': British duo complete epic voyage in Australia after paddling across Pacific Ocean

One last sunrise to sunset. One more session navigating the pitiless slide. A final stretch with aching hands clutching relentless paddles.

However following over 15,000 kilometers at sea – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey across the Pacific that included intimate meetings with marine giants, failing beacons and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

A gusting 20-knot wind off Cairns continuously drove their tiny rowboat, the Velocity, from the terra firma that was now frustratingly within reach.

Loved ones gathered on land as a scheduled lunchtime finish shifted to 2pm, subsequently 4pm, then twilight hours. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they came alongside the Cairns sailing club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe expressed, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We found ourselves beyond the marked route and thought we might have to swim to shore. To ultimately arrive, following years of planning, seems absolutely amazing."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The UK duo – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – pushed off from Lima, Peru in early May (an earlier April effort was stopped by equipment malfunction).

Across nearly half a year on water, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, rowing in tandem during the day, one rowing alone at night while her teammate dozed a bare handful of hours in a tight compartment.

Endurance and Obstacles

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a water desalinator and an integrated greens production unit, the duo depended upon an inconsistent solar power setup for only partial electrical requirements.

During most of their voyage over the enormous Pacific, they operated without navigation tools or location transmitters, making them essentially invisible, nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, traversed marine highways and survived violent tempests that, periodically, shut down every electronic device.

Record-Breaking Achievement

And they've kept rowing, stroke by relentless stroke, through scorching daylight hours, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the initial female duo to paddle over the South Pacific, continuously and independently.

Additionally they collected over eighty-six thousand pounds (A$179,000) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Existence Onboard

The women attempted to keep in contact with the world outside their tiny vessel.

On "day 140-something", they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with another 1,600 kilometers ahead – but granted themselves the pleasure of breaking one open to mark the English squad's triumph in global rugby competition.

Personal Insights

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 achieving record pace.

She has now mastered another ocean. However there were instances, she acknowledged, when they doubted their success. As early as day six, a route across the globe's vastest waters seemed unachievable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the water-maker pipes burst, yet after numerous mends, we accomplished a workaround and barely maintained progress with reduced energy for the rest of the crossing. Every time something went wrong, we merely made eye contact and went, 'typically it occurred!' Still we persevered."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. The remarkable aspect was our collaborative effort, we problem-solved together, and we were always working towards the same goals," she said.

Rowe is from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she crossed the Atlantic by rowing, hiked England's South West Coast Path, ascended Mount Kenya and pedaled across Spanish terrain. Further adventures likely await.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're already excited to plan new adventures together as well. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
