‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Light-based treatment is definitely experiencing a moment. You can now buy light-emitting tools designed to address complexion problems and aging signs as well as muscle pain and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device equipped with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Internationally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. “It appears somewhat mystical,” notes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Various Phototherapy Approaches

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to high-energy gamma radiation. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps

Colored light diodes, he says, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen absorption and cell renewal in the skin, and activate collagen formation – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” states the dermatologist. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, the risk-benefit ratio. Many uncertainties remain.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – despite the fact that, explains the specialist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he observes, however for consumer products, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation.
