2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.
If these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a true croaking cultural moment.
